Consider a Reverse Bucket List

ree

Remember the 2007 comedy movie Bucket List with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman? They were both dying and traveled throughout the world to tick items off their proverbial bucket list or in other words their list of things they wanted to do before they “kicked the bucket.” You might have a list as well if only in your mind.  Mine includes a trip to Greece and a chance to visit with friends I haven’t seen since college.

Harvard Business School professor, Arthur Brooks recommends that we write a “reverse bucket list.” Instead of focusing on things you want to do, you reflect on what you’ve already accomplished. It’s a way to appreciate your past experiences and achievements. It’s akin to a gratitude journal. This practice is based on the idea that lasting satisfaction comes from wanting less, not having more.

So what about you? Take a pen and paper and write down your own reverse bucket list. On my list, I would include my years at Ovation Marketing and the Wisconsin Alumni Association and the  many fun experiences and friends I had there. I would definitely include our adventure to move to Arizona and the many dear friends I have here.  Oh, last but most important of all is my family and the many phone calls and visits that keep us connected. I’d say my list is full of fun and love with special people. Just like I dreamt it would be.
